Why imagination matters

As we begin to pause and reflect on the year that’s been we have seen this in action. Those that have motivated and inspired us and made us feel safer when fear was everywhere, have done so through imagination. Their courage and curiosity compelled them to look outside of what they already knew to create new thinking that challenged established orthodoxies and in collaboration, evolve original solutions to what appeared to be impossible problems.

They were in essence proving another of Einstein’s adages, “You cannot solve a problem from the same level of consciousness that created it”. Imagination replaces fear with curiosity, reframes problems as opportunities and thrives on diverse thinking.

The gift of imagination is that it is the source of transformational positive conflict, inviting us to lean into rather than out of conflict. Imagination drives evolution and organisations and teams that build skills in positive conflict will have the evolutionary advantage as they navigate the as yet unknown challenges of 2022.
